Citizens of many countries can visit Kyrgyzstan without a visa for a period of 30 days. For some countries, a visa on arrival at Manas International Airport is available, and citizens of all countries can apply for an electronic visa. Learn more about Kyrgyzstan's visa policy here https://www.evisa.e-gov.kg/
Kyrgyzstan’s tourism season runs from April to October, offering the best conditions for exploring its breathtaking landscapes. During this period, the snow retreats, revealing stunning trekking trails and high-altitude roads. For winter sports enthusiasts, Kyrgyzstan transforms into a snowy paradise, with ski resorts welcoming visitors from December to March. Whether you're chasing adventure, culture, or relaxation, Kyrgyzstan has something to offer every season!
Summers in Kyrgyzstan are hot, and winters are cold — a typical continental climate. However, in the mountains, the weather changes rapidly: even in the height of summer, the temperature can drop below zero. If you plan to climb the mountains, warm clothes are necessary at any time of year. Also, do not forget sunglasses, cream with a high SPF and a hat — at altitude, the sun is especially active.
If you're on prescription medication, it's essential to bring a sufficient supply for the entire duration of your trip. Ensure your prescriptions are in their original packaging with your name clearly marked. While over-the-counter medications are widely available in Kyrgyzstan, they may differ from what you're accustomed to in your home country. To avoid any inconvenience, we recommend bringing over-the-counter medications in their original packaging for common ailments such as allergies, pain, or digestive issues, so you're well-prepared for any situation.
Traditional Kyrgyz cuisine is largely meat-based, but many restaurants and guesthouses are flexible and can prepare vegetarian dishes upon request. While meat is a staple in most local meals, you’ll find plenty of vegetarian-friendly foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and bread. To ensure your needs are met, please inform us of any dietary restrictions in advance, and we'll work with our partners to provide suitable options for you.
We will provide mats for sleeping, but you should bring your own personal belongings like you would for any other trek. Sleeping bags are available to rent, but it would be better if you brought your own. You should bring hiking boots, sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun cap, warm clothing, a raincoat, and a backpack to carry everything. You are expected to carry your own personal belongings, but extra porters can be hired if you are unable to carry all of your own personal items.
Make sure you have all the essential gear for a safe and enjoyable ride. This includes comfortable clothing, protective equipment, a helmet, riding boots, riding gloves, and leather riding leggings, if possible, to ensure maximum comfort and safety. If you don't have your own equipment, we can provide it on-site, but for the best comfort and confidence in your safety, we highly recommend using your personal gear.
Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted at most banks and hotels. In Bishkek, many shops and businesses accept both cash and cards. However, in smaller cities and rural areas, cash (Kyrgyz soms) is the preferred method of payment. ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are scarce in smaller villages. Most major credit cards are supported at ATMs, and there are no significant usage restrictions beyond daily withdrawal limits, which vary depending on your card. Currency exchange services are common, with competitive exchange rates.
In Kyrgyzstan, the standard electrical voltage is 220V, and the outlets are compatible with Euro plug types C and F. If you're traveling from a country with a different voltage, it's recommended to purchase a voltage converter. Additionally, if your plugs don't match the local type, an adapter will be necessary. Be sure to check the power capacity and circuit specifications of your devices before selecting a converter to ensure safe usage.
Yes, foreigners can easily purchase SIM cards for cellular service in Kyrgyzstan. These can be acquired either from authorized dealers (where you'll need to present your passport for registration).
The national language of Kyrgyzstan is Kyrgyz, with Russian used as an official language. Russian is more common in the capital, Bishkek, while Kyrgyz is the main language in rural areas and other cities. Uzbek and Tajik are often heard in the southern part of the country, and there are also communities speaking Uyghur, Turkish, and other Turkic languages. English is slowly gaining popularity, and German, French, and Chinese are also spoken. Many guides and translators speak several languages, making it convenient for tourists.
During your homestay, you'll enjoy a comfortable and private bedroom, complete with a bath, cozy bedding, soft blankets, and fresh towels—ensuring a restful and rejuvenating stay. When staying in a yurt, you’ll step into a traditional, circular tent, often shared with 3-4 people depending on its size. Toilets are generally located outdoors, and in some cases, they may be western-style for added comfort. Depending on the location, some yurts come with modern amenities like hot water, and those near towns may have access to electricity. However, yurts tucked away in the mountains or high-altitude meadows (jailoos) often operate off the grid, giving you a true off-the-beaten-path experience. At higher altitudes, where temperatures can drop at night, the yurts are heated by small stoves. These stoves are lit in the evening, ensuring you stay warm and cozy.
Yes, purchasing and consuming alcohol is fully permitted in Kyrgyzstan. The country offers a variety of local and imported alcoholic beverages, from traditional drinks to international spirits, beer, and wine. However, as with any country, it's important to drink responsibly and be mindful of local customs and regulations.
There are no official dress code restrictions for women in Kyrgyzstan, but it is important to consider local cultural norms and respect for traditions. Women are advised to cover their shoulders, midriff, and cleavage, and to avoid very short skirts and shorts. In larger cities such as Bishkek, looser clothing may be acceptable, but modest dress is generally recommended. When visiting a mosque or church, women should cover their hair with a scarf and wear a skirt or dress that covers the knees to show respect for the holy sites.
Be prepared to be flexible with toilets. Toilets can be anything from western-style restrooms to simple outhouses, with everything in between. Some places will have squat toilets, and some places may not have running water. On the road, cafes and gas stations will have public toilets.
A visa to Kyrgyzstan does not always give access to all regions of the country - a special pass is required to visit some border areas. Kyrgyz Twins Adventures only issues border passes that we organize and accompany. We do not take responsibility for obtaining permits for mountaineering and extreme sports. It takes at least two weeks to process a pass, so apply in advance to avoid delays in your itinerary.
